This project contains language that may be sensitive to some readers.

Because this project is rooted in historical newspapers, the language used is different than what we use today.

In some parts of this project, you will notice the use of specific rhetoric and word choices for the LGBT+ community that are no longer used or are utilized differently. For example, the word “homosexual” was used throughout this project’s time period as a noun, rather than an adjective.

This practice may not have batted many eyes during the time. Now, it can be seen as derogatory to some. The modern reader may view themselves as a “homosexual person,” not just a “homosexual.” Such language can reduce a person to the minority they are a part of rather than acknowledge their humanity.
